Summary conclusions

Commission representative: Mr. Georgios Katalagarianakis

The meeting was open by Prof. Adrian CURAJ, President of ANCS. He has shown that it seems that Romania has a potential for nanotechnologies and an exploratory project (for which a call for tenders will be launched in a few weeks) has to provide at the end of the year suggestions for a possible national strategy in the field.

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Marian Enachescu, Vicepresident of ANCS. He provided the conclusions, at the end of the meeting (13:30h).

Brief reports about the status of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) in Romania have been delivered by the representatives of ANCS, as well as by the representatives of the funding agencies. Another presentation was related to the N&N in the institutes of the Romanian Academy (of Sciences). One of the major players in the field (National Institute for Physics of Materials) also delivered a speech. Other presentations of research institutes will be accessible on CD and web (www.romnet.net/nano, but they were not effectively presented due to the lack of time.

Two representative companies: Infineon Technologies Romania and Honeywell Romania also had oral presentations, expressing their interest for the N&N field.

Mr. Georgios Katalagarianakis, the EC representative delivered two presentations: one about the strategic plan for nanotechnologies (followed by discussions) and another one, about risk and safety in N&N.

All available presentations may be found here.

The consultation event on 19th of January was prepared by a public workshop taking place at the Romanian Academy, one week before. The title of the event has been „Towards a national strategy in nanotechnologies”. The event was opened by the President of the Romanian Academy, whereas the President of ANCS launched a clear message: the National Authority for Scientific Research is interested to evaluate the potential in nanotechnologies and develop a national strategy, correlated with the strategic plan of EU in the field. The event was attended by 187 people from 56 organizations.
