Pre-proposal abstract

New materials are the driving forces for innovative products and processes, creating commercial success with new jobs. Honeycomb sandwich structures are used in several industrial fields like the aerospace industry as well as automotive industry. The application of aluminum materials in modern cars is determined by intelligent lightweight design: the demand of safety, ecology and recycling and by economics. The insertion of thin MMC ribbons in honeycomb sandwich structures increases the stiffness and the strength of these structures. The use of thin ribbons in the honeycomb sandwich structures as well as the development of a reinforced brazing alloy represents an innovative field.

Al-Si-Mg metal matrix composite materials offer significant potential for use in new products due to the extra improvements in mechanical and physical properties that can be achieved compared with those availed from more conventional metallurgical techniques.

Our plan is to create a machine able to produce carbon-composite ribbons.

The advantages of this new approach are:

1. Capability of producing ribbons, when short carbon fibers were used to obtain metal matrix composites by ultra rapid cooling method.

2. The materials can be recycled by conventional methods without any additional ecological problems and is based on a new concept of manufacturing of reinforced metal matrix composites.

Targets and needs of the pre-proposal

Coordination : an SME Having a large knowledge and expertise in design and development of machinery for composite materials, manufacturing of composite materials for industry.

The partner’ complementary knowledge and competencies to research on the new technologies.

Duration: 36 months
